Tennis Teams Sweep Inaugural Centennial Player of the Week Honors

HAVERFORD, Pa. – After a very successful opening weekend of matches, the Haverford College men's and women's tennis teams swept the Centennial Conference Player of the Week awards in their respective sports with a pair of first year standouts. George Jiang won the award on the men's side while Claire Johnson took home that same accolade for the women's team.

With the men's team playing at the Villanova Invitational, Jiang went a combined 7-1 between singles and doubles to win the Villanova Invitational White Draw along with partner Pranav Krishnan in a best-of-three format. Jiang and Krishnan went a perfect 4-0 in doubles, not dropping a single set over the weekend. Each of Jiang's three singles victories came in straight sets as the pairing defeated pairings from Colgate, Rider, Chestnut Hill, and Delaware en route to the championship.

The Haverford College women's tennis team traveled to rival Swarthmore this weekend for the Swarthmore Invitational. The Fords had a very strong showing in both singles and doubles as Haverford won the second most matches in each of the disciplines among all the schools that were represented. Johnson highlighted some of those standout efforts as she went a perfect 3-0 in singles during her collegiate debut. Each of her three singles wins came in straight sets with two wins against Swarthmore and another against SUNY Geneseo. She also teamed up with Natalie Williams for an 8-5 win in doubles against SUNY Geneseo to cap her successful weekend.

Women's tennis will be back in action this weekend for the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at Mary Washington which get underway on Saturday, September 22. The men will make the trip to Mary Washington next weekend for their ITA Championship that will get underway on Friday, September 28.
