Women's basketball volunteers at Billy Lake ALS marathon

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team volunteered at the 22nd Annual Billy Lake ALS Basketball Marathon that took place at Haverford's Gardner Integrated Athletic Center on Oct. 12.

Hosted by Haverford College for the third consecutive year, the all-day basketball marathon featured youth and adult teams competing for fun while raising funds and awareness in the fight against ALS. The annual event honors the courage of Lake, a Havertown resident, who succumbed to ALS in 1992 at the age of 42.

The women's basketball team helped at the marathon in honor of Libby Meeks, the mother of former Fords' captain Dominique Meeks '13, who passed away from ALS in August after battling the disease for more than a decade.

This year's marathon raised $20,000 toward research efforts by the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the ALS Association as well as the Billy Lake Memorial scholarship fund which has enabled over 20 students to attend Monsignor Bonner High School.

The Haverford community has been a consistent supporter of the fight against ALS as this spring the college will host the Seventh Annual Joe Schwartz '83 Memorial 3K on April 27. The six-year history of the event has seen 887 people participate overall and over $23,000 raised in the fight against ALS.
