ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) has once again recognized Haverford College for its commitment to community service.

The Joe Schwartz '83 Memorial 3K Run/Walk earned honorable mention recognition in the on-going project category at this year's community service awards sponsored by the NADIIIAA and Josten's. The annual cermony took place on January 18 at the NCAA convention in San Diego, California. The awards program aims to recognize the many contribution D-III student-athletes regularly make to their campuses and local communities.

Created by Strength & Conditioning Coach Cory Walts, the Joe Schwartz 3K began as an opportunity to bring all groups/departments of the campus together through a fitness activity. Honoring the memory of a deceased alumnus, the event has succeeded in integrating the entire campus community through the goal of building healthier habits while raising awareness and funding for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research.

The six-year history of the race has seen almost 900 participants and over $23,000 raised in the fight against ALS including a record-total of over $7,000 last April. The 2014 Joe Schwartz 3K will take place on April 27.

Last year Haverford earned an award for the women's basketball team's commitment to the annual Hoops from the Heart Martin Luther King Day basketball clinics.

The NADIIIAA is an association comprised of athletics administrators from the nearly 450 institutions and 43 conferences competing at the NCAA D-III level. A primary purpose of the NADIIIAA is to encourage the continued development of athletics programs focused on the student-athlete and based on sound educational philosophy.
