HAVERFORD, Pa. – It's Top 10 Tuesday! Every Tuesday from now through the end of August, we will take a look back at the Top 10 moments from the 2013-14 academic year. This list was compiled as a way to highlight one of the most successful athletic campaigns in the history of Haverford Athletics, both on the playing field and in the classroom.
Although there were many memorable moments throughout the 2013-14 seasons, we only have 10 summer Tuesdays. For a full list of all the highlights from this past year, be sure to check out the complete list of varsity highlights here. The Tuesday Top 10 will be revealed in chronological order.
Haverford College's track and field members Avi Bregman '14
and Hope Rainey '14 each set Centennial Conference and program
records in the 3,000 meter steeplechase during the 2014 outdoor
season. Both runners won the Centennial Conference championship in
the steeplechase marking the first time that Haverford had won the
men and women’s event in the same year since 2002 (J.B.
Haglund and Kathryn Bexfield). It was Bregman’s third
consecutive conference title in the steeplechase while Rainey was
just the second repeat women’s winner in conference
history.
Bregman established a new Centennial Conference and program
record with a time of 8 minutes, 51.30 seconds at the Larry Ellis
Invitational hosted by Princeton University on April 18. His
record-breaking performance is tied for 10th all-time among
Division III performances. His successful season continued with his
second consecutive fourth place finish in the NCAA Outdoor Track
and Field Championships, earning him his second All-American award.
The Haverford graduate was also rewarded with a NCAA post-graduate
scholarship last month.
Rainey set her records at Swarthmore College's Final Qualifier
Meet on May 12(10:48.21). During the Centennial Conference
championships event, she won with a time of 10:56.43 which was 12
seconds less than her previous personal-best time and 20 seconds
faster the next closest competitor. Rainey capped her senior
campaign by qualifying 10th in the NCAA Outdoor
Track and Field Championships and running in the preliminaries
before withdrawing because of an injury.
Be sure to check back with HaverfordAthletics.com each Tuesday for more top moments from the 2013-14 academic year. These moments will run up until the opening weekend of fall sports at Haverford College.
