Internship/Paid Assistantship

A Haverford College Strength & Conditioning Internship is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to develop the hands-on skills necessary to start a successful career as a Strength & Conditioning coach, sports performance specialist, personal trainer, or fitness center director.

The student will gain valuable knowledge and hands on experience in exercise technique, program design, and facility management. Applicants should be working towards a degree in exercise science or related field.

Responsibilities: Successful candidates will assist the Head Strength and Conditioning coach in all aspects of training for 21 Division III programs. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting the strength and conditioning coach with the design and implementation of sport-specific strength, speed, agility, and quickness programs. Additional responsibilities include weight room supervision, daily upkeep and maintenance of equipment, and any other duties as assigned by the strength and conditioning coach. Interns are available to work 10 to 30 hours per week.

At the conclusion of the internship the student will be able to:

  • Develop periodized training programs encompassing routines that improve athletic performance while preventing injury. Daily sessions should include a warm-up, core training, plyometric, sport-specific resistance, agility, and speed exercise, and post workout flexibility/recovery session.
  • Understand the differences in program design and implementation for a variety of athletics teams throughout various phases of their training (in-season, off-season, pre-season).
  • Teach all of the movements involved in our program including Olympic Lifts.
  • Understand and counsel on sport nutrition.
  • Interact with and train a general population (non-athlete students, staff & faculty) in a professional manner.
  • Manage and upkeep a newly constructed, state of the art fitness center

Required: Working towards a bachelor's degree in exercise science or a related field, and a certification with NSCA-CSCS. Preferred: bachelor's degree, CSCS (or acceptable and related) certification. Applications are accepted year round to fill 2 internship positions each semester.

Compensation: Possible college credit and valuable experience with both collegiate athletes and the general population, managing a fitness center, and guidance in pursuing a career in Strength and Conditioning or a related field. This is an unpaid internship.

NSCA Student Assistantship

The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) is offering up to five student assistantships each year to qualified candidates. Students who are awarded an assistantship will have an opportunity to work with an experienced strength and conditioning coach who has earned the NSCA Registered Coach Distinction, has demonstrated high levels of professional service and accomplishment in the field of Strength and Conditioning, and has four or more years of Head Strength and Conditioning coaching experience. Haverford College meets all of these requirements and is an available destination for interested individuals. Each recipient will be awarded a $10,000 stipend over a 12-month period.

 Purpose

The purpose of the Student Assistantship Program is to link qualified students with experienced coaches to help develop the next generation of strength and conditioning professionals. This is an excellent opportunity for the college graduate to gain practical, applied experience in strength and conditioning while learning from a highly skilled and educated mentor. Additionally, the Student Assistantship program is an exceptional vehicle for the established strength and conditioning professional to access qualified apprentices.

Qualifications

The students chosen to be part of this program should demonstrate high levels of academic achievement and show a focus in the field of strength and conditioning. The following criteria will be considered when awarding the assistantships:

  • Students must have completed a graduate or undergraduate strength and conditioning curriculum from an accredited college or university.
  • Students should be involved in the strength and conditioning field. Work and/or volunteer experience as an assistant strength and conditioning coach will be considered.
  • Applicants must possess current certification as a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS®) and have or expect to receive CPR certification. Applicants must also be members of the NSCA.
