Moravian blanks Fords

Moravian blanks Fords

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Haverford College baseball team was shutout by non-conference opponent Moravian College on Wednesday afternoon, 8-0.

Moravian tacked on an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning off of Haverford starting pitcher Casey Fox and that was all that the home team needed to get the win. The Greyhounds added seven more runs throughout the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to pull away from the Fords late in the game.

The loss drops the Fords back to .500 with an 8-8 record, while the Greyhounds improve to 16-4 and have now won 10 straight games.

Haverford simply could not make solid contact at the plate all day. Moravian had five total pitchers throughout the game, and only one of them surrendered more than one hit. The Greyhounds starting pitcher Ben Hammel (2-1) tossed two scoreless frames without allowing a hit or walk. Fox (1-1) received his second start on the bump this year and gave up just three hits and one unearned run through three innings.

What hurt the Fords the most was their inability to hit with runners on the bases. Haverford went 0-10 with runners on base and 0-7 when it had runners in scoring position.

Haverford sent six different pitchers to the mound during the contest. Clay Bloszies and Grant Finn each got through an inning of work without allowing a hit, while Brett Cohen and Max Gerard each hurled a strikeout.

The Fords return to Centennial play on Friday when they travel to take on rival Swarthmore College. A Haverford win allows the Fords to clinch the Hood Trophy. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
