Baseball team drops non-conference game to Bulldogs

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Haverford College baseball team collected 10 hits in Wednesday afternoon's 10-3 non-conference loss to host DeSales University.

The Fords (16-16) were led by leadoff man Nick Miranda, who went 2-for-4 from the plate and lifted his batting average to .384 which is second in the Centennial Conference. Catcher Sam Kane and designated hitter Jamie Ulrich each went 2-for-3 at the dish and Ulrich collected an RBI.

Haverford scored the first run of the game on an RBI from Ben Verducci in the top of the second. The Bulldogs (20-13) responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame, two more in the third and five in the fifth to take a commanding 10-1 lead after five frames of play.

The Fords hosted a ninth-inning rally in which Miranda and Ulrich each had RBI singles, but DeSales was able to limit the threat to those two runs and finished with the 10-3 win.

Right-hander Brett Cohen (0-1) received his first start of the season on the mound and only allowed one hit and one earned run. Haverford threw six different pitchers in the game who combined for nine total strikeouts. John Masella, George Hatamiya and Anthony Rizzo each struck out at least two batters.

Haverford returns to its Centennial slate on Friday, April 25 to conclude its season series with Franklin & Marshall College. The Fords won the first game of the series, 7-1, and look to capture the season sweep of the Diplomats on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
