Philly-SIDA Tabs Bergjans as Academic All-Area

PHILADELPHIA - Haverford College right-handed pitcher Tommy Bergjans has earned All-Conference, All-Region, and All-American honors this spring, and on Wednesday the junior added yet another accolade to his resume. Bergjans was voted onto the Philadelphia Inquirer's 2014 Academic All-Area Baseball Team, as released by the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA).

In order to be eligible for academic all-area consideration, an athlete must be in at least his second year at the institution and own a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

The Manhattan Beach, Calif. native was the Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Year for the second-straight season and was named a First Team All-American by both D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). Bergjans ranked second in Division-III in hits allowed per nine innings (4.58), third in strikeouts (96), and ninth in ERA (1.08).

The junior was named to the conference spring academic honor roll and helped the Fords to a Centennial title and a deep run into the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional with his program-best nine wins in 2014. Bergjans pitched six scoreless innings in relief during Game 7 of the conference championships and fanned 13 batters in the first round of the NCAA regional against top-seeded Moravian College. Haverford won both games as Bergjans set the new school mark for career wins at 22.

The academic all-area nod is the second straight for Bergjans. Bergjans limited opposing batters to a .148 average and allowed just 12 extra-base hits in 74.2 innings of work in 2014. A consistently dominant force on the mound, Bergjans struck out eight or more batters in eight of his 10 starts.

In just three seasons at Haverford, Bergjans already owns multiple school records. Bergjans' myriad of program marks includes career wins (22), career strikeouts (263), single-season wins (9), single-season strikeouts (96), single-season Ks per nine-inning game (12.39) and single-season ERA (1.08).
