Baseball Drops a Pair to Begin 2015 Season

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Haverford College baseball team dropped its first two games of the 2015 season, falling to the Monmouth (Ill.) Fighting Scots (15-10) and to the North Park University Vikings (4-0) on Sunday afternoon.

Monmouth (Ill.) 15, Haverford 10
Freshman Matt Goss led the way for the Fords, going 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored in his collegiate debut. Sophomore Thomas Vollaro had a team-high three hits and also scored a run. Senior Casey Fox tallied a hit and run scored while junior John Miraglia was tagged with the loss despite striking out seven.

North Park 4, Haverford 0
The Vikings scratched across a run in the seventh inning and three more in the eighth which proved to be the difference. In the seventh, after North Park's Joe Belmonte singled, a passed ball advanced him to second. Belmonte moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a Nate Simons sacrifice fly. In the eighth inning, an Alec Strachota RBI double and two-run double by Dan Sabin gave the Vikings the insurance runs they needed.

Senior Tommy Bergjans was outstanding in the loss. The two-time D3baseball.com All-American struck out 12 batters in six innings of work, allowing just four hits and one unearned run. It's the 11th time in the senior's career in which he's struck out at least 10 hitters in a game.

The Fords registered three hits in the contest from sophomore Ben Verducci, junior Nick Ott and Fox. Fox also snagged his 44th career stolen base which places him in a tie for 12th all-time.

North Park's Alex Vannucci picked up the victory for the Vikings with a complete game shutout.

Head coach Dave Beccaria's team will look to get in the win column tomorrow with a doubleheader vs. Wisconsin Lutheran. The first game is scheduled for 9 a.m.
