Fox Throws Complete Game; Knocks in Two in Fords' Win

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team scored five runs in the second inning as it went on to defeat the Muhlenberg College Mules 7-2 at Kannerstein Field on Monday afternoon.

Haverford scored twice in its first at-bat behind back-to-back RBI doubles from senior Casey Fox and freshman Spencer Sohmer.

Junior Nick Ott led off the second inning with single and moved to third on a double by sophomore Zach Taylor. Three batters later, sophomore Ben Verducci came up with a two-run single with two out to put the Fords in front 4-0. The Fords' next three hitters Fox, Sohmer, and freshman Mike Schmandt ripped RBI doubles to give the home team a 7-0 advantage.

After allowing an unearned run in the third inning, Fox, who started on the mound, retired six straight Muhlenberg batters. In the sixth inning, the Mules' Jimmy Cody led off with a triple to center and scored on a ground out. Over the final three frames, the visitors were held just one base runner, sealing the victory for the Fords.

Fox threw his first career complete game, scattering four hits and striking out five. At the plate, the senior went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Verducci had a team-high three hits along with knocking home two and scoring twice. Sohmer had his second straight multi-hit outing and fourth in his last five games.

Head coach Dave Beccaria's squad improves to 8-15 overall and 4-6 in the Centennial Conference while Muhlenberg drops to 9-13 this season and 3-7 in conference play. The Fords will welcome Ursinus to Kannerstein Field tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
