Ursinus Gets By Baseball, 12-10

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team's comeback fell just short as it lost to the the Ursinus College Bears, 12-10, on Tuesday afternoon at Kannerstein Field.

Freshman Spencer Sohmer led off the Fords' half of the second inning with a double down the left field line. After moving to third on a ground out, sophomore Yannick Villanueva laced an RBI double to right center. Villanueva came around to score on an RBI single by sophomore Zach Taylor.

Ursinus responded with eight runs in the top of the third inning, highlighted by a three-run double by Timo Muro. Haverford got one back with a sacrifice fly by senior Casey Fox in the bottom half of the third, but the Bears added two more in the fourth to jump in front 10-3.

In the next half inning, Haverford added three runs to cut its deficit to four (10-6). The first three hitters for the Fords reached base before sophomore Thomas Vollaro brought one home on an RBI groundout. One batter later, freshman Matt Goss doubled down the right field line to give the Fords their fifth and sixth runs of the contest.

The Bears posted two runs in the seventh inning while Villanueva registered an RBI on sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame. The Fords put together a rally in their last at bat. With one out, Villanueva doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior Nick Ott followed with an RBI single, making the score 12-8. Taylor, the next hitter, ripped his fourth career home run to left field, but the home team couldn't get any closer.

Villanueva set career highs with four hits and three runs scored. The sophomore also finished with two doubles and two RBI. Sohmer also had two doubles and nabbed his fifth multi-hit game in his last six contests. Taylor tied his career best with three RBI. Ott and Goss had two hits each in the loss. The Fords have 10 doubles in their last two games.

Muro had two hits and four RBI while Seth Regensburg went the final 5 1/3 innings to score the victory for the Bears. 

The baseball team drops 8-16 overall and 4-7 in the Centennial Conference while Ursinus improves to 15-9 and 5-6 in conference action. These two teams get back at it on Friday. This game, to be played at Ursinus, is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
