Herring Named Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford sophomore pitcher Justin Herring has been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team, the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA) announced on Thursday morning. The team is nominated and voted on by the sports information offices of 30 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Herring joins nine other baseball honorees in taking home the plaudit.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better.

Herring adds the academic award to an increasingly long list of honors after just two seasons as a Ford. Herring was named Second-team ABCA/Rawlings All-Mid Atlantic Region in addition to D3baseball.com All-Mid Atlantic Region and First-team All Centennial Conference honors following the season. This is the second academic recognition for Herring, a Centennial Conference Honor Roll recipient in 2016.

The Douglasville, Pa. product started 11 games in 2016, going a perfect 7-0 from the mound with a 1.58 ERA. He compiled six starts without allowing an earned run and gave up two or fewer earned runs on 10 occasions. Herring was named Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 21 after striking out 10 batters. In the Centennial Conference tournament, Herring struck out a career-best 11 batters in six innings of work without surrendering an earned run as Haverford took down McDaniel en route to a Centennial Conference Championship and another berth in the NCAA Regionals.

Herring's career mark of 8.37 strikeouts per nine innings is third in Haverford history and his career 2.76 ERA currently is good for fourth in program history. Herring's single season wins mark last season (7) is tied for the third most in a single campaign.
