BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Haverford College Baseball team split a doubleheader with host NYU on Saturday afternoon at MCU Park in Brooklyn. The Fords were defeated 11-9 in the first game and took a 7-4 win in the second. Spencer Sohmer had six RBI on the day to pace the Fords, who are now 8-6 on the season. NYU sits at 10-4 after the split.

Game One

In the first game of the day, Haverford sent Brandon Jenkins to the bump to face the Violets lineup. The Fords got out to an early 4-0 lead against NYU starter Cam Serapilio-Frank, striking for a single run in the second inning before tacking on a three-spot in the fourth.

Harrison Burns singled home Ben Verducci to open up the scoring and the Fords went back to work offensively in the fourth.

Spencer Sohmer reached on an error and stole both second and third base, setting up Ben Verducci with an RBI opportunity. Verducci cashed in the chance and stole second with Ben Furlong up. Furlong then cleared the bases with a triple to score Verducci and came home himself on a wild pitch as the Fords grasped the early momentum for Jenkins with a 4-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the frame, Jake Elias keyed a three run rally with a single before Scott Hilbrandt walked with the bases loaded to pick up an RBI as the Fords lead was cut to just 4-3. After John Masella (1-2) took over on the mound for Jenkins in the fifth, an RBI groundout after a two-out error tied the score at 4-4.

Will Karp delivered a two-RBI single in the sixth inning against Anthony Delia after the hurler walked the bases loaded and Haverford took a 6-4 advantage into the bottom of the inning. Masella delivered a 1-2-3 frame and the Fords rallied for another run in the seventh as Sam Partee doubled Spencer Sohmer into scoring position and saw him score on a wild pitch. 

A six run frame in the bottom of the seventh turned the tide in favor of the host Violets.  Bobby Moskow delivered a sac fly with for the second out of the inning before a wild pitch scored a run and Jack Brouwer hit an RBI single to equalize at 7-7. Jack Walter punched home a bases-clearing triple to give NYU a 10-7 lead.

Sohmer roped a two-RBI single to left field in the eight to cut the lead to 10-9, but NYU added an 11th run with a Jon Iaione single in the eighth.  Matt Millus worked around a two-out single from Harrison Burns to hold on for the save.

Game Two

The second contest of the day saw the Fords send Dylan Livingston (2-1) up against Colman Hendershot (1-1) in the starting matchup.

After Karp doubled to left to begin the contest and Ethan Lee-Tyson was hit by a pitch, Sohmer keyed early runs for Haverford with a two-RBI triple before being called out at home trying to stretch the extra-base hit into an inside-the-park home run.

Livingston held the Violets at bay in the first two frames and the Fords put up a four spot in the third. Sam Partee walked before Hendershot hit three batters in a row, with Jared Turner picking up a painful RBI.

The next hitter, Owen Plambeck, singled to left field to plate a pair as Hendershot was chased from the contest with Haverford leading 5-0. Julian Henry took over and hit yet another batter as Sohmer also picked up an RBI on the hit batsman.

NYU got a run on the board in the bottom of the frame, but Livingston escaped without further damage. Hendershot, who moved from the mound to the DH spot, hit a bases loaded triple to signal the end of the day for Livingston, as NYU made it a game again at 6-4.  

Livingston struck out two over five frames before giving way to Jared Deveau. Deveau pitched the final four innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five to pick up the save with a valiant effort when the Fords needed a stabilizing force.

Thomas Vollaro picked up an outfield assist, as Jon Iaione was tagged out at home to end the sixth inning after trying to cut the lead to just one on a Max Juang single.

Haverford added a run on a Sohmer squeeze bunt in the top of the seventh. Ben Verducci had two singles for Haverford in the contest.

Haverford returns to action with a trip to South Jersey to take on host Rowan at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening. Haverford is then slated to open up the home portion of the schedule on Thursday, March 30 against seventeenth-ranked TCNJ. First pitch will be at 3:30 p.m. at Kannerstein Field.
