Baseball Can't Catch Ursinus in 12-6 Loss

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College baseball team (11-8, 2-1 CC) was defeated by visiting Ursinus College (14-4, 3-0 CC) on Wednesday afternoon at Kannerstein Field by a final tally of 12-6. Sam Partee led the way for Haverford on the day offensively, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI while drawing two walks. Harrison Burns extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning while Ethan Lee-Tyson extended his reached-base streak to 13 straight contests. 

Ursinus jumped out to a 5-0 advantage in the top of the third inning against Haverford starter Nathan Vucovich (1-2). After the Bears loaded the bases with no one out, CJ Diana doubled and Austin Kurey homered to give the visitors a 5-0 lead. The Bears added two more runs in the top of the fourth, scoring on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.

The Fords got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fourth as Nick Perez was hit by pitch to lead off the inning and promptly stole second. After Sam Partee walked, Burns delivered an RBI single. Will Karp was hit by a pitch and Thomas Vollaro walked with the bases loaded, cutting the advantage to 7-2 in favor of the Bears.

Ursinus added a pair of runs in the sixth, but the Fords got one back in the bottom of the seventh. Spencer Sohmer was hit by a pitch with one out, stealing second ahead of a Partee RBI single to left field.

Ursinus tallied in the eighth and ninth frames to go ahead 12-3 before the Fords made some ninth inning noise. Lee-Tyson led off the frame with a double to left field before Spencer Sohmer singled, scoring Tyson. Partee doubled in Sohmer and later scored on a wild pitch as Haverford cut the deficit to 12-6 in the final inning of action.

David Drea (2-0) picked up the win for the Bears, striking out four and walking five over five three-hit innings. Matt Radwanski pitched 3.1 innings of relief, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits as the Fords made things interesting late, forcing the Bears to give the ball to Lou Aikins for the final two outs. 

For Haverford, Vucovich and Daniel Joffe combined for the nine innings of the hill. Vucovich struck out three while Joffe added a pair.

Haverford again was a force on the basepaths, swiping five bases including two from Sohmer.

The Fords and Bears will reprise their Wednesday meeting on Friday afternoon, as a 3:30 p.m. first pitch is slated between the two squads on the campus of Ursinus.
