Baseball Can't Solve Edgewood in Doubleheader

FORT MYERS, Fla. – On day two of Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic play, the Haverford College baseball team dropped a pair of seven-inning contests to Edgewood, with the Eagles coming up victorious by final scores of 1-0 and 9-6.

Edgewood's Steven Gavin (1-0) out-dueled Haverford's Dylan Livingston in game one. Livingston (0-2) went five innings, striking out eight batters while allowing just two hits. Gavin allowed just three hits and struck out seven, walking a pair. 

Edgewood added an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning as Alex Fowler delivered a single to score Dane Lamont, who had reached bsae on an error. The Fords put runners in scoring position in the third and fifth innings, but were unable to solve Gavin. Ethan Lee-Tyson, Owen Plambeck and Michael Schwarze all singled for the Fords.

Ryan Giovenco pitched the sixth inning in relief for Haverford, striking out two in a scoreless frame.

In game two, Edgewood took a come-from-behind 9-6 victory with a four-run seventh after the Fords grabbed the lead at 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Nathan Vucovich got the start on the mound for the Fords, taking on Mason Maziarka of the Eagles. Edgewood grabbed an early 2-0 lead on a double from Jeff Tucker and a wild pitch in the first inning. In the bottom of the frame, the Fords grabbed a run back as Will Karp walked and stole his way to third base, setting up Spencer Sohmer to deliver an RBI groundout.

Haverford tied the score in the second on an Edgewood error. The Eagles grabbed the lead back in the top of the third inning, as Callen Gavic walked with the bases loaded and Casey Willis singled after Vucovich had been replaced on the mound by Justin Herring

Luke Wallis tallied a two-RBI single in the bottom of the third, plating Jared Turner and Plambeck to tie the score at 4-4. In the fourth, Ben Furlong knocked a one-out double and Lee-Tyson walked. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Lee-Tyson and Furlong executed a double steal, with the Fords taking the lead as Furlong stole home.

In the sixth, Edgewood tied the score at 5-5 on a Haverford error, but back-to-back singles from Matt Goss and Schwarze allowed the Fords to take a 6-5 lead on Karp's double play grounder.  Tom Phillips (0-1) took over on the mound to begin the seventh and Edgewood promptly rallied to load the bases. Casey Willis tied the score at 6-6 with a bases loaded walk and Bryan Sternig doubled to clear the bases, handing Edgewood the 9-6 lead that would hold as the final score.

Sam Partee reached with two-out in the seventh, but Ryan Fields pitched the seventh inning to pick up a save. Alex Meister (1-0) picked up the win for Edgewood with three innings in relief, allowing three hits and two earned runs. 

Haverford stole eight bases in the second game after being shutout on the base paths in game number one. The Fords will continue Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic play with a single game against Plattsburgh State at noon on Tuesday.
