Game Two Barrage Sends Baseball to Doubleheader Split

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College baseball team (14-14, 7-3 CC) split a doubleheader against visiting Johns Hopkins (19-10, 8-2 CC) Saturday, storming to a 13-8 win in the second game after Johns Hopkins grabbed an 8-1 victory in the first. Ethan Lee-Tyson had five hits in nine at-bats on the day, tallying four RBI. Michael Schwarze hit a pair of home runs in the second game to provide the power for the hosts. 

In game one, the Fords ran into Johns Hopkins ace Alex Ross (2-3), as the Blue Jays starter went seven strong innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Dylan Livingston (2-3) was credited with the loss, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits over his 3.1 innings of work. A four-run frame for the Blue Jays gave the visitors a 6-0 lead as Chris DeGiacomo homered in the inning.

Lee-Tyson had a pair of singles to lead the Fords attack. Haverford pushed a run across in the ninth inning against reliever Jack Bunting. Pinch hitter Jared Turner singled through the left side of the infield and scored on a two-out single from Luke Wallis to end the shutout bid. 

In game two, the Fords turned the tables on the visitors from Baltimore as starter Ryan Giovenco retired the first eight batters to begin the contest. The Fords plated the first run of the afternoon on Schwarze's solo shot down the right field line.In the third, Haverford grabbed two more runs against Nick Bodner (2-1). After Harrison Burns led off the inning reaching on an error, Will Karp walked. With two out, Spencer Sohmer struck out swinging on a ball in the dirt, but the throw from the Johns Hopkins catcher sailed past first base and into the outfield, allowing the pair to score for a 3-0 lead.

Matt Eberle homered as part of a three-run frame as Johns Hopkins responded, but Schwarze led off the fourth with a homer before the Fords extended the cushion to 7-3, Matt Goss and Lee-Tyson each tallied RBI hits in the frame while Karp delivered a sacrifice fly.The Fords would never trail again, but Hopkins plated a pair in the fifth, chasing Giovenco from the game. Justin Herring (1-0) came on in relief and righted the ship for the Fords, with three shutdown innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five. 

A four-run sixth inning included RBI singles from Lee-Tyson, Owen Plambeck and Schwarze as the Fords broke things wide open at 11-5. Haverford eventually made it 13-5, adding two on an RBI single from Lee-Tyson in the seventh. The Blue Jays plated three runs in the ninth, but Haverford had more than enough cushion to finish the split as Tom Phillips spelled Thomas Primosch and recorded the final two outs of the contest. 

Five different Fords recorded multi-hit games and five Fords scored multiple runs. Haverford was facing Johns Hopkins at home since 2015. Prior to Saturday, the last nine meetings between the two programs occurred in the state of Maryland.

The Fords will return to action Tuesday, traveling to conference foe Muhlenberg for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
