HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford Senior third baseman Spencer Sohmer and junior outfielder Ethan Lee-Tyson have each been named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team, the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors (Philly-SIDA) announced on Thursday afternoon.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
Sohmer, a 2018 NSCA Strength & Conditoning All-American and honorable mention All-Centennial Conference selection, finished a stellar Haverford career with another solid season, started all 36 games in 2018. The Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y. product ranked in the top 10 in the conference in RBI (33) and stolen bases (14) while hitting .301. His .444 on-base percentage was good for seventh in the conference. A 2016 All-Conference and All-Region selection, the economics leaves Haverford in the top five in program history in RBI (114), total bases (256), at-bats (515), doubles (36) and triples (8).
Lee-Tyson adds the academic plaudit to D3Baseball.com All-Mid Atlantic Region honors and a first-team All-Centennial Conference designation. Lee-Tyson started all 36 contests for the Fords. He ranked third in the Centennial Conference in batting average (.372) and hits (60). Lee-Tyson was second in the Centennial Conference in runs scored (40) and fifth in on-base percentage (.451).
Lee-Tyson was one of the hardest hitters in the nation to strike out this season, with just 10 strikeouts in 145 at-bats. On the basepaths, Lee-Tyson helped pace the high octane Fords running game with 16 steals in 19 attempts. Through his third season at Haverford, The Weston, Conn. product sits in the top five in program history in career batting average (.376) and total bases (250). Lee-Tyson's 55 hits in 2018 was the 10th-most in the single-season history of the program.
The 2018 season marks the first season since 2013 that the program has had multiple honorees named to the Academic All-Area team. In 2013, Tommy Bergjans began a run of three-straight selections to the squad while Casey Fox and Kevin Goff were also recognized. Sohmer and Lee-Tyson are also the first position players honored by the Inquirer since the 2013 campaign.
