Baseball Eclipsed by #1 Wooster, 6-2

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After dispatching the then-No. 6 Scots on the spring break trip in 2018, the Haverford College baseball team (2-3) couldn't catch up with top-ranked Wooster (2-1) in the rematch, falling by a 6-2 final in Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic action on Wednesday afternoon at Terry Park. Will Karp had a three-hit day to pace Haverford from the leadoff spot.

Wooster's Andrew Hill (1-0) kept the Haverford bats at bay in his stint on the mound, surrendering just two hits and an unearned run in his 5.1 innings of work. Hill struck out eight batters, walking four. The Scots bullpen recorded the final 3.2 innings of work, allowing just three hits and an unearned run.

Wooster struck for a pair of early runs off Haverford lefty Brandon Jenkins. After Wooster coaxed three walks to load the bases with one out, Jacon Stuursma delivered a sacrifice fly to open the scoring. Chandler Dippman followed with an RBI single, pushing Wooster to a 2-0 lead. Haverford clawed back with its first run against Hill in the bottom of the third. Zach Landry was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Ryan Schwartz then reached on an error, plating Landry in the process.

Stuursma added an RBI triple in the fourth, and the Scots plated a run in the fifth on a Dan Gail single with Daniel Joffe on the mound. The lead reached 5-1 as Stuursma pushed a run across with a squeeze bunt in the eighth inning. Luke Wallis walked to begin the Haverford eighth and pinch-runner Nick Perez took second on a wild pitch and grabbed third on a fielding error, setting the stage for Karp with two down. Karp punched a single into left field, plating Perez as Haverford cut the lead to 5-2.

Dan Harwood tripled and Dan Gail followed with a double to score Wooster's sixth run in the ninth, before first year Martin Matsumura was able to retire the side with a pair of strikeouts in the frame.

The Fords return to action tomorrow with a single contest against Rockford (Ill.) The first pitch is slated for noon at the PDC complex in Fort Myers.
