FORT MYERS, Fla. - On the final day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, the Haverford College Baseball team (6-3) posted a 14-1 victory over Lakeland (0-8) in a contest that was ended after seven innings due to a 10-run mercy rule.  Haverford finishes the annual trip to Southwest Florida on a spirited four-game win streak. In the stretch, Haverford has been dominant, as the Fords have outscored their opponents by a tally of 57-11.

First year lefty Martin Matsumura (1-0) thrived on the mound on Saturday afternoon, logging five innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out six Muskies in his first career start.

Haverford built its lead with a three-run first inning, as Will Karp lead off with a walk and Ethan Lee-Tyson reached on a hit by pitch. Karp scored on a wild pitch and Ryan Schwartz then singled. Luke Wallis walked to load the bases, and a Lakeland error plated Lee-Tyson and Schwartz for a 3-0 Haverford advantage. A nine-run, five-hit third inning featured Lee-Tyson connecting on a three-run home run and Owen Plambeck delivering an RBI double.

Haverford added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, as Luke Smith knocked an RBI double in the sixth and Kevin Casey doubled in the seventh ahead of a Daniel Joffe RBI single.

Zach Landry had two hits in the morning matinee, roping a one-out double in the second and following the feat with an RBI single as part of the afformentioned flurry of runs in the third.

The Fords now return to action on Tuesday, March 19 at local foe Gwynedd Mercy. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. as the team embarks on a challenging stretch of nine games in just 11 days. The home opener comes during that slate, as Haverford will make its 2019 debut at the friendly confines of Kannerstein Field on Wednesday, March 20 against Widener (3:30 p.m.)
