Cricket Hosts Annual Alumni Contest

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College cricket program held its annual alumni game at Cope Field on Saturday afternoon. The twenty-over match was a competitive and eventful contest that resulted in the current Haverford side winning the match 145 for 1 to 143 for 7.

President Wendy Raymond opened proceedings by presenting a brief speech to honor the storied tradition of cricket at Haverford, as well as the meaningful nature of cricketers of different generations getting together to bond over their mutual passion for the sport.

Both innings were notable throughout, with brilliant displays from both sides. The current crop of Fords put their ability on display, with quick and alert fielding—exemplified by junior Malcolm Thompson's surreal catch near the boundary—and in-form batting from the top order showing why they have gotten the results they have so far this season. The alumni side also looked as if its players had not lost a step since, especially with the indomitable Munik Shrestha hitting his way to an unbeaten half-century.

After a shot to the boundary from Shukla sealed the match in the current team's favor, the Fords of past and present got together for a brief scrimmage session before having dinner in the pavilion. There, the alumni had a chance to reminisce about their time playing at Haverford—also with coach Kamran Khan—and to get to know members of the current roster.

The alumni present during the game included Paul Trapido '78, David Schwed '83, William Dove '88, Peter Taylor '90, Matthew Abraham '97, Nehad Chowdhury '98, Neil Kharim '04, Garrett McVaugh '04, Reid Sherman '04, Munik Shrestha '09, Sam Gerstin '10, Karan Shah '12, Abdullah Khan '13, Matthew Smith '13, David White '17, Isfar Munir '18, Richard Phillips '18, Andrew Cornell '19, and Paige Powell '19.
