Field hockey wins on the road at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Goals from Bryn Bissey and Megan Holt launched Haverford College past host Gettysburg College in Saturday afternoon's 3-1 Centennial Conference field hockey victory at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Bissey put the Fords (5-3, 1-1 C) on the board first with a goal early in the game's sixth minute. She dribbled into the box and evaded charging Bullets goalie Alexis Bralow then fired a shot into an open cage to give Haverford a quick 1-0 lead.

Shortly before halftime Gettysburg (3-4, 0-3) generated extensive pressure in their attacking end as it searched for the equalizer but Haverford's defense held firm. A quick transition down the right sideline gave the Fords possession deep in Bullets territory where Bissey eventually poked in a shot from the right post to push the visitor's advantage to 2-0 at the 24:08 mark.

Gettysburg displayed its quick-strike attack with a break-away goal five minutes later. That would be the final tally of the opening 35 minutes, though, allowing Haverford to take its 2-1 lead into the intermission.

Action tilted evenly in both directions during the second half as the Fords clung to their slim advantage. Finally, Holt scored on a blast from 10 yards out in front of the Gettysburg goal to give Haverford breathing room with just under eight minutes remaining in the contest. Christina Gould made the pass to Holt to earn the assist.

Holt's marker would be the final score of the game giving the Fords their third win in a row, a stretch that includes a 10-3 advantage in goals scored.

Lindsey Lopes finished with four saves to earn the win in goal for the Fords while Bralow took the loss after coming up with five stops.

Haverford continues conference play with its next contest, a home outing Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Ursinus College.
