HAVERFORD, Pa. – Freshman Elena Veale scored the game-winning goal in overtime on a penalty stroke to give the Haverford College field hockey team a 3-2 victory over the Eastern University Eagles on Wednesday afternoon at Swan Field.

Senior Jen DiMaria got the scoring started with her first goal of the season in the 13th minute on a breakaway opportunity. The Eagles (0-2) responded back in the 20th minute when Alex Borrelli scored on a shot in front of goalkeeper Lindsey Lopes and tied the game at 1-1. One of the biggest plays of the game was in the first half when junior Allison Martin had a defensive save on a shot by Megan Bolton off a penalty corner with no time remaining.

The score remained tied at the half despite the Fords (1-1) leading in shots (7-5) and having more penalty corners (4-2). In the second half, the Eagles created more pressure offensively, outshooting the Fords 9-5. Eastern finally struck through in the 68th minute as Bolton scored her first goal of the season off a penalty corner to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

DiMaria answered for Haverford as she brought the ball from outside the arc and put one past Eastern goalkeeper Jennifer O'Neill. It's the sixth time in DiMaria's career in which she's scored at least two goals in a game. The senior almost scored a hat trick, but her shot with 13 seconds remaining was wide of the net.

Two minutes into overtime, Veale was rewarded a penalty stroke and shot it past O'Neill for the game-winner and her first career goal.

DiMaria and Veale led the Fords with three shots on goal while Lopes picked up eight saves in the victory. Bolton led all players with two defensive saves while O'Neill made two saves in the loss.

The Fords will get back in action on Saturday against the Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Fords defeated the Dutchmen 2-1 last season.
