DOVER, Del. – The Haverford field hockey team used a strong first half to defeat the Wesley Wolverines 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Scott Miller Stadium.
Freshman Elena Veale scored her fourth goal of the season in the fourth minute on an assist from senior Catherine Aronowitz. Veale is now tied for the team lead in goals with senior Jen DiMaria.
The Fords maintained their offensive pace in the 11th minute as freshman Paige Carson had her shot blocked while DiMaria's follow up shot was sent wide and freshman Stephanie Terrell's shot was also blocked.
The Wolverines thought they had tied the game in the 24th minute on a shot by Morgan Seymour, but junior Allison Martin came up with her team-high third defensive save of the season.
Five minutes later, Aronowitz drove the ball to the net and found Carson open on the right side who shot it passed Wesley's goalkeeper Kayla Fromal to make the score 2-0.
Haverford held Wesley to just five shots on goal in the game, including just one in the second half. The Fords had 21 shots in the game and 10 shots on goal. DiMaria led the Fords with five shots on goal. Aronowitz set a career-high with two assists in the game. Junior Lindsey Lopes made four saves for her second career shutout. Seymour led the Wolverines with three shots on goal in the loss.
Haverford improved its record to 4-4 on the season while Wesley's record fell to 5-4. The Fords will host Muhlenberg in a Centennial Conference matchup on Wednesday at Swan Field beginning at 5 p.m.
