HAVERFORD, Pa. – Despite sophomore Nicole Witte's first career goal, the Haverford College field hockey team fell 2-1 to the Muhlenberg Mules in a Centennial Conference matchup on Wednesday at Swan Field.
The Fords' lone goal came in the third minute as senior Jen DiMaria brought the ball along the left side of the arc and found Witte who got it past Muhlenberg's goalkeeper Sierra Lenker.
Witte became the third Fords' player to score her first career goal this season, joining Elena Veale and Paige Carson.
The Mules scored their first goal of the night in the 19th minute off a penalty corner. Rachel Strow found Kayleigh Thies who shot it near side past junior goalkeeper Lindsey Lopes to tie the game at one. A few minutes later, Thies scored off a penalty corner again with the setup from Strow to give the Mules a 2-1 advantage.
Junior Allison Martin kept the Fords' deficit at one when she intercepted a pass that would have led to a breakaway in the 28th minute.
Haverford pushed the offensive pace to begin the second half, but a save by Lenker and a defensive save by Heather Porinni kept the home team off the scoreboard.
The Fords finished the second half with a 5-0 shots on goal advantage, but couldn't get one past Lenker who made all four of her saves in the second stanza.
DiMaria tallied her 53rd career point in the loss which is 15th all-time in program history.
The Fords fell to 4-5 on the season and 0-2 in the conference while the Mules' record improved to 6-2 and 2-1 in conference play. Haverford will host Gettysburg on Saturday with the game set to begin at 1 p.m.
