Field Hockey Dropped by Eastern, 3-2

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to the Eastern University Eagles on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt.

Senior Sarah Waldis put the Fords in front at the 6:43 mark of the first half. The senior captain found some open space on a breakaway and fired one past the Eagles' goaltender Nicole Berger for her second goal of the season. With goals in two of the Fords' three games this year, Waldis has already set a career high with five points.

Just when Haverford thought it was going into halftime with a 1-0 advantage, Eastern scorecd on an untimed corner. The Eagles' Gina Miller put it past the Haverford defense to tie the game at one.

Eastern jumped in front with two goals within the first six minutes of the second half. Jess Kinzler gave the home team a 2-1 lead with a tally from the right side of the field near the top of the circle. Megan Bolton added an insurance tally for Eastern almost four minutes later on a strike from the top of the circle.

The Fords did not turn away despite the two-goal deficit. Sophomore Stephanie Terrell posted her first goal of the season with 14 minutes to go to make it 3-2. Haverford was rewarded with a penalty stroke a few minutes later, but it was knocked away by Berger.

Haverford improved its offensive intensity in the second half as it had seven shots, finishing with nine in the game. Eastern scored all three of its goals off of corners and finished with a 10-4 advantage in the contest. Waldis led the visitors with three shots on goal while six other Fords had a shot in the game.

Head coach Jackie Cox's team fell to 1-2 on the season while Eastern improved to 2-1 overall. Today's win for Eastern evened the all-time series at 10-10-1. Haverford will welcome Lebanon Valley to Swan Field on Saturday with the game scheduled for noon.
