GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team (7-2, 3-0 CC) continued its hot streak as it won its sixth game in a row, defeating the Gettysburg College Bullets, 1-0 (3-6, 0-4 CC) at Shirk Field on Saturday afternoon. The Fords' winning streak is tied for the fourth longest in program history.
Sophomore Elena Veale continued her torrid scoring pace with the game's only goal in the 47th minute. The sophomore has recorded a goal in four straight games for the first time in her career. She has five goals during that stretch, adding to her career high with seven goals this year.
A tight defensive effort by both teams kept the first half scoreless. The Fords registered their first penalty corner in the eighth minute, but a shot by senior Sarah Waldis was blocked. Haverford goalie Lindsey Lopes got tested in the 32nd minute as she came up with a save to keep the Bullets off the scoreboard.
Haverford picked up the first scoring chance in the second half as Waldis thought she had her eighth goal of the season, but Gettysburg's Philippa Lumsden came up with a defensive save. The Fords finally got on the board in the 47th minute when the Bullets' goalie Haley Mowery saved a Waldis shot, but Veale snuck the ball past her on the rebound.
The Fords looked to add on to their lead, but Mowery would make two more saves in the second half while another two shots were off the mark. Gettysburg did not go quietly, forcing Lopes to make three more saves in the final stanza. In the 67th minute after a Lopes' save, senior Allison Martin came up with a huge clear off a dangerous rebound.
That wasn't the last time that Martin provided heroics for the Fords. The Bullets were awarded an untimed penalty corner as time expired. Lumsden took a shot towards the cage and Martin prevented the ball from reaching the back of the cage for her 11th career defensive save, giving the Fords their second straight 1-0 victory.
The Fords' winning streak is the longest since the 2012 season. Today's win was Haverford's seventh consecutive win over Gettysburg. Head coach Jackie Cox's squad will face back-to-back top-ten teams with No. 8 Ursinus at Swan Field on Wednesday (7 p.m.) and No. 7 Franklin and Marshall on the road next Saturday.
