HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team ended a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays at Swan Field on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Sarah Waldis added on to her career high with her seventh goal of the season. Junior Nicole Witte recorded the game-winner while senior Brenna Boehman gave the home team an insurance tally in the second half. Junior Natalie Leslie recorded a career-high two defensive saves in the win.

It was the Blue Jays who had the first scoring chance of the contest in the fourth minute. Off a penalty corner, Haverford goalie Lindsey Lopes made back-to-back saves. About a minute later, Hopkins got Lopes away from the cage, but Cone kept the conference foe off the scoreboard by knocking the ball away.

Johns Hopkins took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Bridget Hampton poked the ball by Lopes in a battle in front of the cage. Haverford quickly answered two minutes later. Waldis found some open space in the center of the field, dribbling into the offensive zone before firing one past Hopkins' goalie Greta Helvie.

Leslie, off a corner, found senior Allison Martin who had her shot attempt denied by Helvie, but Witte picked up the rebound and put the Fords in front, 2-1. Johns Hopkins had a great scoring threat right before halftime, but Kiana Duncan's shot was high and off target. After a slow start, Haverford finished the first stanza with 14-9 advantage in shots and 6-4 lead in penalty corners.

In the 40th minute, Boehman found some room along the left side of the field and deposited the ball in the cage to put Haverford ahead by two, matching her career best. The Blue Jays' best scoring chance in the second half came after a shot by Duncan was thwarted by Lopes with 13 minutes to go and Lindsey Adams' rebound attempt was stopped by Leslie.  Hopkins pulled its goalie for the final 3:37, but couldn't get one by the Haverford defense.

With the win, head coach Jackie Cox's team improved to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial Conference while Johns Hopkins fell to 5-8 this season and 2-4 in conference action. The Fords are in third place in the conference behind No. 4 Franklin and Marshall (7-0) and No. 8 Ursinus (6-1). The field hockey team will take on Bryn Mawr on Wednesday night (7 p.m.) at Swan Field.
