HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team ran by the Bryn Mawr College Owls, 7-0 at Swan Field on Wednesday evening. It's the second time this season that Haverford has scored seven goals in a game.
It took just 18 seconds for the Fords to get on the scoreboard. Sophomore Elena Veale, off the opening draw, drove into the offensive zone and took a shot from inside the circle. Sophomore Paige Carson deflected Veale's shot in the back of the cage to put Haverford on top.
Veale got into the action in the 17th minute. After stealing the ball, the sophomore slapped one by the Bryn Mawr goalie, Angela Meng. Carson tallied her second goal of the night seven minutes later for her second career multi-goal game. Freshman Mason McNulty added an assist on the play. Senior Sarah Waldis wrapped up the first half scoring with a goal off a pass from Veale across the circle in the 34th minute.
In the second half, McNulty scooped up a rebound and recorded her second career goal. A pair of Fords also registered their first career goals in the second stanza. Freshman Charlotte Eisenberg slipped one by the far post off a touch pass from sophomore Alexandra Fascione-Hutchins. Fascione-Hutchins nabbed her first career tally as she touched in a pass from junior Nicole Witte to finish the scoring.
With her two tallies, Carson has new career best in goals (seven) and points (15). Veale finished with a goal and two assists, matching her personal best for points in a game. McNulty and Fascione-Hutchins each had a goal and assist to set new career benchmarks.
14 different Fords took a shot for a total of 34 along with 21 penalty corners to help the offense. Senior Lindsey Lopes picked up her ninth win of the season. Lopes' 28 career wins is one shy of Maggie Cronin '11 for the most victories in program history. Sophomore goalie Danielle Rette saw time in the second half, but did not see any action.
The field hockey team's record jumped to 9-5 this year and 5-2 in the Centennial Conference while Bryn Mawr slipped to 0-10 overall and 0-7 in conference action. The Fords have now surpassed their win total from last season.
Haverford sits fourth in the conference playoff race behind Franklin and Marshall (7-0), Ursinus (7-1), Dickinson (6-2). Head coach Jackie Cox's team holds the tiebreaker over Dickinson. Up next for Haverford is a trip to McDaniel on Saturday (1 p.m.). The Fords defeated the Green Terror, 2-1 last season.
