Field Hockey Stopped by No. 8 Messiah

HAVERFORD, Pa. – After starting the 2016 season with a hard-fought victory at Cabrini, the Haverford College field hockey team fell to No. 8 Messiah by a 7-0 score on Saturday afternoon on Swan Field.

The Falcons (1-1) were led by a hat trick from Carissa Gehman while four other players scored a single goal in the contest. Haverford finished the game with six shots, four of which were on goal. Elena Veale led the team with two shots on goal. Paige Carson and Nicole Witte also took shots on goal, while Alissa Valentine and Casey Wakai had shots that were just off target.

Defensively, Shelby Landes picked up the win for the Falcons as she played the first 55 minutes of the contest before giving way to Megan Bomba in the final 15 minutes. Landes made three saves before Bomba came on to make the final save in the team's shutout.

Danielle Rette made the start in goal for Haverford and stopped seven shots on the afternoon. The team also got a defensive save from Natalie Leslie to prevent a scoring opportunity.

Field hockey will be back at home this Wednesday against Eastern in a 5 p.m. start.
