Field Hockey Turns Away Cabrini, 3-1

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College Field Hockey team battled rainy conditions on Wednesday afternoon at Swan Field, prevailing over visiting Cabrini by a final tally of 3-1. Mason McNulty tallied a pair of goals in the win while Danielle Rette made nine saves in goal. The Fords improve to 2-0 on the young season while Cabrini is now 0-3.

The first half was a scoreless affair, with Cabrini earning nine penalty corners and outshooting the Fords 11-6, taking some early momentum. In the 32nd minute, Cabrini garnered a penalty corner and the initial shot by Trisha Billig found a waiting Rette. The rebound went to the stick of Jackie Neary, who appeared to have the opening goal before Leela Krishnan picked up a defensive save after clearing the ball off the goal line.

The second half saw the Fords pick up the opening strike in the 41st minute. Elena Veale took the ball off the entry pass and dribbled towards the top of the circle. She rifled a cross in that found the waiting stick of Mason McNulty, who pushed it past Taylor Bookman for a 1-0 lead. Cabrini called timeout to regroup following the goal.

In the 47th minute, the Fords got on the scoreboard yet again. After earning a corner, Stephanie Terrell inserted a long pass to Elena Veale. Veale found Paige Powell in the center of the circle and Powell glided an attempt towards Bookman. The ricochet found the waiting stick of Terrell who hammered it home to double the Haverford advantage at 2-0 with her first tally of the season.

Cabrini scored in the 50th minute as Maddy Worley sent one into the back of the cage, but the Fords scored in the 62nd minute. Kelsey Chai put the ball in play on a corner attempt and after an initial denial, the ball made its way to McNulty on the far right side of the goal mouth. McNulty powered a shot from a sharp angle, finishing towards the far post for a 3-1 advantage to Haverford.

McNulty fired six shots to lead the Fords while first year Emma Iacobucci was active on offense with two shots on goal. Rette's nine saves matched a career best. The Fords earned 13 corners in the second half after taking just one in the first 35 minutes of action.  Jackie Neary had six shots (four on goal) to lead Cabrini. Workman finished with 10 saves in a losing effort. The Fords improve to 13-4 all-time against Cabrini.

Haverford will return to action on Saturday with a quick trip up the Main Line to Eastern for an 11:00 a.m start against the host Eagles. The Fords are 11-10-1 all-time against Eastern, taking a 4-2 win last season. Paige Carson scored three goals in the September 7 victory.
