GLASSBORO, N.J. – Despite scoring the game's opening goal, the Haverford College field hockey team suffered its first setback of the 2017 season with a 3-1 defeat at Rowan on Saturday. The Fords (5-1), who tied the program record with five straight wins to start the season, got a goal from Lucy Tortolani before the Profs (3-3) scored three unanswered goals.

Tortolani's goal came in the 14th minute of game action after she collected a loose ball in front of the net and was able to redirect a pass from Ariana Sulpizio home. Tortolani's goal was the second of her season and sixth of the sophomore's career. The assist from Sulpizio marked the first career point for the Fords' first year player.

Reigning Philadelphia Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week Danielle Rette came up with a game-high 12 saves on Saturday afternoon which was just one stop short of her previous career high that was set a year ago when these two teams met. However, after six straight saves to start the game, the Profs broke through with 8:43 to play in the opening half as Rowan's Marissa Ciocco collected a loose ball at the top of the circle for an unassisted goal. Just 42 seconds later, Myranda Christy hammered home another loose ball in the circle as the Profs took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Haverford owned more of the attacking chances in the second half with an 8-6 edge in shots and 6-1 advantage in attacking penalty corner chances. Nevertheless, Rowan goalie Carly DiMarco came up with five saves during the second half and finished with six stops for the contest. The Profs made the most of their chances during the second half as Julie Johnson scored the game's final goal with 24:42 to play. That goal came just a minute before Haverford had Mason McNulty in front of goal with the goalie beat only to have a defensive save stymie that chance for the Fords.

Rowan finished with a 20-10 edge in shots which was skewed by the Profs' 14-2 advantage in shots during the first 35 minutes of play. The Fords did finish with more short corner chances, an 8-5 edge, thanks to their strong second half of play. McNulty finished with a team-best three shots on the afternoon. Tortolani's goal came on her only shot attempt of the contest.

Field hockey will return home this coming Wednesday for the start of Centennial Conference play as Muhlenberg comes to Swan Field for a 7 p.m. start. Haverford will also be on the road next Saturday when the team travels to No. 14 Franklin & Marshall.
