Field Hockey Blanks Bryn Mawr, 6-0

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team blanked host Bryn Mawr, 6-0, in a Centennial Conference matchup at Applebee Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Fords received an opening goal from junior Alissa Valentine, the first of her career, and cruised behind two goals each from Valentine and Roxy Vassighi along with tallies from Paige Powell and Charlotte Eisenberg. Haverford improves to 9-7 overall (4-5 CC) while Bryn Mawr falls to 6-10 overall (0-9 CC) in defeat.

The Fords stay alive in the chase for a Centennial Conference playoff spot with a third-straight win, a contest that saw the Fords outshoot the Owls 16-1 while holding a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners.

The Fords opened up the scoring in the 23rd minute after earning a corner. The ball found the stick of Valentine in the circle, and the junior hammered home a shot towards the bottom right corner of the cage for the opening salvo and a 1-0 lead to the visitors. In the 33rd minute, Vassighi redirected a shot attempt off the stick of Ariana Sulpizio as the former high school teammates connected for a 2-0 lead.  

Powell, a teammate of both Sulpizio and Vassighi at Moorestown (N.J.), scored the third goal of the contest, just nine seconds before the halftime buzzer. Powell slotted a shot on the right side of the cage after an initial save from Angela Meng, gave Haverford the 3-0 halftime advantage. The goal was the seventh of the season for Powell, who takes over the team lead in goals (7) and points (15). Leela Krishnan was credited with the assist on the goal. 

Vassighi opened up the second half scoring with her second of the contest and third of the season in the 40th minute and Valentine tallied her second of the afternoon following a corner in the 47th minute. Eisenberg scored her first of the season with a 52nd minute strike following a scrum in front of the cage.

Danielle Rette got the start in the cage for the Fords, making one save before being spelled by first year Sunny Truslow, who saw her first career action. Truslow played the final 17:34 in relief.

Grace Morris has the lone shot on goal for the Owls, taking the attempt off a corner in the 44th minute.

The Fords return to action on Saturday, October 28 for a 3 p.m. Senior Day contest with Swarthmore. The matchup between Hood Trophy rivals will feature a chance to honor the contributions of Jolie Brakey, Paige Carson, Malin Ehrsam, Alexandra Fascione-Hutchins, Danielle Rette, Stephanie Terrell and Elena Veale to the Haverford Field Hockey program.
