READING, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team scored three times during the final 12 minutes, overcoming an early 1-0 deficit on the road at Alvernia on Sunday. During the eventual 3-1 victory, Paige Powell scored both of Haverford's goals while Casey Wakai added the insurance with less than two minutes left in regulation time.

With the latest victory, the Fords (2-0) cap off a perfect opening weekend to the season as they also tallied three times in the victory Friday at Cabrini. Powell's pair of goals were her first two of the season after she found the back of the cage seven times as a junior. Today's game-winner marked the third such goal of her career.

The Golden Wolves (0-2) struck early as just 1:15 into the match the hosts secured a penalty corner. Morgan Mondschein deposited that chance into the back on the cage to quickly put her side up a goal. Both teams finished the first 35 minutes of play with three shots. Haverford goalie Hannah Roth made two saves as the Golden Wolves put all of their attempts on target.

Down 1-0 at the half, Haverford opened things up in the second half and completely took control of the match. The Golden Wolves did not see another chance at the cage while the Fords finished a fast and furious final 35 minutes with 20 shots during that time. Nevertheless, it took until the 10th shot of the second half before Powell tied the game at one. Lucy Tortolani recorded her first career assist on the game-tying tally.

Just over four minutes later, Powell was back in the circle as she scored the eventual game-winning goal with 7:28 remaining in regulation time with an unassisted tally. The Fords' final goal came on a penalty stroke from Wakai who tallied her fifth career goal, three of which have come via a penalty stroke. That goal came after the Fords saw a penalty stroke saved by the Alvernia goalie just four minutes into the second half. Roth also stopped a penalty stroke of her own during the opening half which prevented the Golden Wolves from going up 2-0.

Roxy Vassighi and Tortolani each finished with a team-high four shots on Sunday, with eight different Fords registering multiple shots. Haverford also earned eight attacking penalty corners, compared to just two for Alvernia.

Field hockey will now turn its attention to the home opener next Saturday at noon on Swan Field against Eastern.
