HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team (6-8, 2-6 CC) dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Dickinson (4-11, 3-5 CC) on Saturday afternoon. Haverford owned a 13-5 advantage in shots and a 12-5 advantage in penalty corner opportunities on the afternoon.
Prior to the contest, the program honored the four members of the senior class as part of the annual Senior Day festivities on Swan Field. Charlotte Eisenberg, Mason McNulty, Paige Powell, and Alissa Valentine were honored for their dedication and commitment on and off the turf. The class has been one of the most succesful in program history, both athletically and academically.
Once the opening whistle sounded, Haverford first year goalkeeper Hannah Roth was tested, as she was called into action just 56 seconds into the contest, stopping a shot from Chelsea Kramer. The Fords earned a corner in the fourth minute, but McNulty had a shot attempt blocked. Haverford tested Dickinson goalkeeper Heather Meeder in the 13th minute, with Paige Powell getting a shot on frame before Casey Wakai saw her attempt cleared by a defender, as Emily Mycek notched a defensive save to keep the game scoreless.
The Red Devils again were forced to defend corners in the 15th and 16th minutes, with Roxy Vassighi and Caroline Aronowitz registering shots on goal on the latter attempt as Meeder turned away both opportunities.
Dickinson struck on a corner in the 29th minute, as Chelsea Kramer scooped up possession in front of the goalmouth and was able to bury a shot past Roth for a 1-0 lead, an advantage they would take into halftime.
The Fords held a 6-4 shot advantage, as well as a 4-3 corner lead, at the halftime intermission.
In the second, Haverford picked up the pace with a renewed offensive urgency. A corner attempt in the 46th minute of action appeared to register the equalizer in the ledger of the Fords, but Hannah Spiri cleared a Roxy Vassighi shot off the back line, notching the second defensive save of the contest for the Red Devils.
From that point, Haverford controlled the majority of possession, earning several fruitless corners before calling for timeout with just over 10 minutes to play in regulation. Haverford earned three more penalty corners in the final 10 minutes, but shot attempts from Vassighi and Lucy Tortolani could not find the back of the cage as the Red Devils escaped with a win.
Vassighi had five shots to pace Haverford, putting two of those attempts on cage. Meeder made four saves in total. Kramer was the only Red Devil with multiple shot attempts.
The Fords return to action on Wednesday, October 24 as they welcome Bi-Co neighbor Bryn Mawr to Swan Field for a 4:30 p.m. first pass. The midweek contest serves as a prelude to the regular season finale at Swarthmore on Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m.
