HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team (6-9, 2-7 CC) found itself on the wrong side of a thrilling contest decided in a shootout, as visiting Bryn Mawr (9-7, 2-7 CC) stunned the Fords by winning the shootout 3-2. The Owls were credited with a 1-0 win following the shootout victory. The matchup was just the second in Haverford program history to reach the end of double overtime as the Fords and Owls also battled to penalty strokes in 2005.

The two sides could not find any separation on the scoreboard through a full 90 minutes of play. The Fords took an early flurry of shots following a penalty corner in the 19th minute, with Rylee Fennell putting a pair of attempts on frame, but the two teams headed into the intermission deadlocked at 0-0. Bryn Mawr held a slight five to four advantage in shots while the Fords held a slim three to two advantage in penalty corner opportunities after the first 35 minutes of action.

In the second, goalkeeper Hannah Roth was tested as the Owls earned five penalty corners in the stanza. Roth made a key save just 10 minutes into the second period and turned away a shot from Lydia Fisher in the 65th minute of action. The Fords successfully defended a Bryn Mawr corner attempt in the 67th minute, as the contest seemed destined for an extra frame, representing the second overtime contest at Swan Field this season.

In the first 7v7 extra period, Bryn Mawr earned the first corner opportunity, but it was the Fords who came out firing with Ravenel Davis rocketing an attempt on cage in the 77th before also seeing a shot saved by Owls goalkeeper Maggie Titus in the 80th minute. The second overtime saw the Fords pick up back-to-back penalty corners in the 84th, with Bryn Mawr calling for timeout in response to the rejuvenated offensive effort for Haverford.

A last-ditch penalty corner attempt for the Fords in the 90th minute also represented one of the best scoring chances for either team on the afternoon as Paige Powell's strong shot from the top of the circle skipped off the pads of Titus, sending the teams to the shootout.

Casey Wakai and Caroline Aronowitz both buried their attempts as the Fords were perfect in the first two rounds of the shootout. Bryn Mawr matched the effort, missing just one of their four attempts to escape Swan Field with the win.

Roth made five saves for Haverford while Titus made eight for the Owls. In total, the Fords earned nine penalty corners and put eight shots on frame.

Haverford will wrap up the 2018 campaign at Hood Trophy rival Swarthmore on Saturday, October 27. First pass at Clothier Field is slated for 1 p.m.
