HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College field hockey team is now 2-0 on the young season after doubling up Alvernia by a 4-2 score on Sunday afternoon. The Fords rebounded quickly from an early 1-0 deficit with four goals over the first three quarters.
Anna Kirn scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Haverford attack. Emma Iacobucci and Roxy Vassighi also scored for the Fords, as they outshot the visiting Golden Wolves by a 16-8 margin. Haverford also had a 7-4 advantage in penalty corner chances.
The Golden Wolves broke into the scoring column during the first minute of the game after one of those short corner attempts. Haverford goalie Hannah Roth made the initial save after the insert, but the rebound found the stick of Madison Potthoff who beat the defense 54 seconds into the contest.
Nevertheless, Haverford countered with four straight goals as the Fords did not look back the rest of the afternoon. The Fords' first goal came in very similar fashion to Alvernia's tally. Following a penalty corner, Ravenel Davis saw her initial shot saved by the goalie, but Iacobucci was in prime position to hammer home the rebound and level the score at 1-1.
Haverford took the lead for good during the second quarter when a beautiful pass in transition got Kirn behind Alvernia's backline. Her initial shot was saved, but Kirn was able to recollect the possession and beat the keeper on her second attempt. Kirn's third goal of the season put the Fords up 2-1 with just under five minutes to play before the half.
Coming out of the halftime break with an even more determined mindset, the Fords held a 6-0 edge in shots during a dominant third quarter. Vassighi got the scoring started in the second half with her tally just 7:13 into the third quarter. Vassighi put a perfectly placed shot in the back of the cage off a pass from Kirn. Just over three minutes later, Kirn found her second goal of the game in unassisted fashion to put her side up 4-1 heading into the fourth.
With Haverford leading by three, Alvernia was able to get one of those goals back with just over two minutes remaining in the contest. However, those four goals provided by the Fords' attack were more than enough for the Haverford goalies who split playing time between the halves. Roth got the start and picked up the victory as she made three saves over the first 30 minutes. Sunny Truslow came in after the halftime and made one more during the final 30 minutes of regulation.
Field hockey will look to keep its perfect start to the season going this coming Wednesday as it hosts Cabrini at 5 p.m. That contest will be the last in a span of three straight home contests to start the 2019 season. Haverford's first road contest will be next Saturday, September 7 when the team makes the quick trip to Eastern for a 12 p.m. start.
