COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Haverford College field hockey team (6-5, 0-4 CC) dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 11 Ursinus (8-2, 4-1 CC) Wednesday evening at Snell Field, concluding a stretch of three consecutive games against nationally ranked opposition.
The Bears opened up the scoring in the fourth minute, with Erin Saybolt burying a rebound after a flurry of shots in front of the goal. The Fords had a chance at grabbing the equalizer in the final minutes of the opening quarter, as Roxy Vassighi saw her shot attempt sail just wide of the cage following a centering pass in the 13th minute of action.
Haverford controlled the offensive tempo at the start of the second quarter, notching four penalty corners in less than two minutes in a fast-paced sequence. Delaney Snowden fired a pair of shots in the stretch, forcing Ursinus goalkeeper Addie Frey to make her first save of the contest before a second attempt was blocked by a swarming Ursinus defense.
Jordan Moore added a second quarter goal for Ursinus, tallying the second strike of the contest in the 26th minute. At halftime, the Bears held a 9-4 edge in shots, but the two sides were even with five corners each.
The Bears extended their lead to 3-0 with a goal that came from Jamie Meyer in the early goings of the second half, and later added goals from Brianne Nicholas and Gemma Dufoe in the frame for a 5-0 lead. Frey made her second save as Ariana Sulpizio notched a shot on target in the 57th minute.
Sunny Truslow made seven saves in her start between the pipes for the Fords while Leela Krishnan and Ravenel Davis each tallied defensive saves. Vassighi had three shots to pace Haverford offensively.
Saybolt tallied four shots for Ursinus, while Meyer added three. Ursinus recorded a 16-7 shot advantage on the night, but the Bears notched just one more corner than Haverford, owning that lead at 7-6.
The Fords now return to action on Saturday at Gettysburg (8-5, 3-2 CC). First pass for that contest is slated for 1 p.m.
