HAVERFORD, Pa. - Haverford field hockey sophomore Sophia Mercado has been named a Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III Scholar of Distinction, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced in a release on Wednesday morning.

To be eligible for the annual scholar of distinction list, a student-athlete must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.90 through the first semester of the 2019-20 academic year. A total of 321 student-athletes from across the nation took home the honor in Division III this season.

Mercado appeared in eight contests for Haverford a season ago, with the Fords registering a 6-2 mark in those appearances. Through her first two seasons at Haverford, the Wilton, Conn. product has appeared in 16 games on defense.

In a memorable 2019 campaign, Haverford received votes in the NFHCA poll for the first time since the 2015 season and were ranked in three consecutive releases of that weekly poll. The Fords went an impressive 7-2 at home, matching the most wins on the Swan Field turf since 2012.
