Rally falls short in upset bid of Dickinson

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Anthony Reyes and Lucas Colombo helped lead a second-half rally but it wasn't quite enough Saturday afternoon in Gooding Arena as Haverford College's men's basketball dropped a narrow 75-70 decision to visiting Dickinson College in Centennial Conference action.

Reyes and Colombo finished the game with 15 points apiece for Haverford (5-8, 1-7 CC), each scoring 11 points of their game totals in the second half as the Fords trimmed a 14-point deficit to just three with 3:28 remaining the game.

Dickinson (13-2, 8-0), the leader in the conference standings, withstood the Fords' rally over the final minutes to earn the road victory.

The opening 20 minutes of action went back and forth as the teams traded the lead six times in between five ties. The closing minutes of the topsy-turvy half helped shape the outcome.

Brett Cohen's jumper at the 4:22 mark upped a Haverford lead to six, 33-27, but that would be the last points the Fords would score until early in the second half.

A 15-0 run from Dickinson to close out the half erased the Haverford advantage and allowed the Red Devils to take a 42-33 lead into the halftime break. Brandon Angradi's three-pointer to open the second half stretched the run to 18-0 before a Colombo jumper broke the string.

Haverford's deficit grew to 14 by the time the clock wound toward the 13-minute mark, but the Fords chipped away over the next four minutes to pull within six, 62-56, on a Cohen layup with 9:43 to play.

Dickinson pushed back with a Brian Gerney trey but the Fords eventually battled back to within five points, 67-62, with 7:39 remaining.

A layup from Cohen along with successful throws by Cohen and Reyes helped trim the deficit to 71-68 at 3:28 but the Red Devils finally stanched the bleeding and held on for the win over the pesky Fords.

Cohen finished tied for game-high scoring honors, pouring in 22 to lead Haverford's scoring attack. Gerry Wixted, also with 22, led three Red Devils in double-figures for the afternoon.

Haverford continues home action with its next outing, a Wednesday night rivalry match-up in Gooding against visiting Swarthmore College.
