Cohen tops all scorers in loss at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Brett Cohen scored a game-high 22 points and Louis Cipriano chipped in with 11 second-half points but Haverford College's men's basketball team wasn't able to overcome a double-digit halftime deficit to host Ursinus College in an 87-78 loss to the Bears in Centennial Conference action Tuesday night at Helfferich Hall.

Haverford (6-10, 2-9 CC) owned a lead throughout the opening 10 minutes of action but Ursinus (3-15, 1-10) closed out the half with a 23-9 finish over the final 9 minutes and 57 seconds to carry a 43-30 lead into the intermission.

The deficit proved to be too large to overcome, despite shooting 63 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes, as the Fords closed the gap to single digits only twice in the second half.

Matt Sherman got the Fords off on the right foot with a three-pointer for the game's opening basket. The Haverford advantage was as large as five points in the early going, and the visitors held off the home-standing Bears until a pair of John Kanas free throws put Ursinus ahead 22-21.

The home team never trailed after those free throws though Cipriano certainly made his mark.

Held scoreless in the opening half, Cipriano scored all of his 11 points in the second 20 minutes of action with three of his four baskets coming from long range beyond the arc.

Cohen's two halves of play were identical as he scored 11 and pulled down three rebounds in each half. Along with Cohen and Cipriano reaching double-figures in scoring for the Fords were Anthony Reyes (13 points), Sherman (11) and Gibby Graves with 10.

Ursinus' Pat Vasturia was the difference-maker for the Bears as he came off the bench to lead the home team in scoring with 20 points, including four three-pointers. Trevor Norton, also coming off the bench, added 13 while starter Jesse Krasna provided 17 more.

Haverford will try to get back on the winning track with its next outing, a home contest Saturday against league foe Johns Hopkins University at 3 p.m. in Gooding Arena where the Fords have captured three of their six wins during the season.
