Cohen named academic all-area

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Haverford College men's basketball senior Brett Cohen was selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer 2014 Academic All-Area team as released this week by the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA).

Cohen, a Rockville Centre, N.Y. native and mathematics major, paced the Fords in points (15.8) and rebounds (9) per game during a stellar senior campaign that included 21 double-digit scoring performances and 10 double-doubles. The senior was one of five players voted onto the squad by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area. In order to be eligible for academic all-area, an athlete must be in at least his second season at the institution and own a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher.

The three-year starter finished the season ranked first in the conference in steals (48) while also residing in the top 10 in points (second), rebounds (second), minutes played (second), blocks (sixth) and field-goal percentage (seventh). His 148 defensive rebounds on the year constitutes a new single-season program record.

Cohen, who earned honorable mention all-conference recognition as a junior, became the 15th player in program history to surpass the 1,000-point mark, crossing the plateau against visiting Gettysburg College on January 14.

Cohen will graduate as the program record holder in offensive and defensive rebounds with 254 and 502, respectively while also ranking among the all-time statistical leaders in blocked shots (third), minutes (third), field-goal percentage (fifth), rebounds (fifth), field goals made (sixth), steals (seventh) and points (eighth).

In addition to his performance on the court, Cohen was named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Senior Chris Fouch of Drexel University was named the 2014 Philadelphia Inquirer's Men's Basketball Player of the Year. For a full list of the all-area academic team click here.
