Men's Basketball Upended by Ursinus in Home Opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's basketball team was upended by visiting Ursinus in the home and Centennial Conference opener for the Fords. The visiting Bears (3-0, 1-0 CC) shot over 54 percent from the field to overtake the Fords, 80-53.

Sophomores Sam Stogdon and Joe Scibelli led Haverford's offensive efforts with 14 points each. Stogdon got most of his points on a very efficient night as he went 5-of-7 from the floor. On the other hand, Scibelli did his damage at the free throw line as 10 of his points came at the charity stripe. Ursinus had a trio of players reach double figures with Matt Knowles tying Stogdon and Scibelli with a game-high 14 points.

Ursinus jumped out to the early advantage with of the game's first 14 points as the Fords just seemingly could not connect from the floor in the early going. Despite falling behind early, Haverford evenly battled back-and-forth with Ursinus throughout the remainder of the first half but could not overcome that early deficit despite getting the Bears' lead into single digits twice in the opening 20 minutes.

Not even the halftime break could stop the Bears torrid shooting in the second half as Ursinus bumped its shooting percentage above 55 percent during the second half in the eventual 80-53 victory. The offensive for Ursinus came in a variety of directions as nine different players made a shot from the field in the second half.

Men's basketball will now be back on the road during each of the next two weekends before returning to Gooding Arena for Centennial Conference action.

The Fords will have a quick turnaround after the Thanksgiving holiday as they will battle Bryn Athyn this Saturday with tip off scheduled for 2 p.m.
