Sherman Scores 22 to Celebrate Senior Day vs. McDaniel

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Celebrating Senior Day, Matt Sherman poured in a game-high 22 points to lead the Haverford College men's basketball team against McDaniel on Saturday. Unfortunately, the Green Terror had four players reach double figures during their eventual 72-60 win inside the Gooding '84 Arena.

Sherman scored 14 of his points in the opening half as the Fords were locked in a tight battle. Adding eight more points during the final 20 minutes, Sherman now has 989 career points heading into the final weekend of the regular season. He will have his next chance to eclipse the 1,000 point mark this coming Wednesday when the Fords host Hood Trophy Rival Swarthmore in his final home game.

In addition to Sherman's offensive exploits, Haverford matched its counterparts by also putting four players in double figures. Jonathan Lang finished with 12 points on the afternoon, while Kyle Goldfarb and Kahlil Garnes each added 10 points. McDaniel's quad of double figure scorers featured each of those individuals scoring at least 16 points. The Green Terror's Kevin Yrizarry was the lone visitor to record his 17th point.

Playing a tightly contested opening half which was a one possession difference for a majority of the time, Haverford saw the score tied on three different occasions. The Fords got the opening bucket as Kyle Goldfarb got into the lane for two points to start the contest. After a 2-2 start, the score was also tied at 18-all and 25-all during the first period of action.

The Fords shot over 61 percent during the first 20 minutes of game action with Sherman spearheading that effort as he was 5-of-6 from the field and connected on each of his three-point attempts during that time.

During the second half, the shooting percentage favored the Green Terror as McDaniel used an early 7-0 run to extend its lead to 42-34 after Haverford had just made the game a one point difference.  Back-to-back baskets from Sherman brought the game within a single possession once again, but a 9-0 run proved to be the point where McDaniel solidified its advantage for the remainder of the contest.

Haverford finished the contest with nearly double the points from beyond the arc as the Green Terror, but could not overcome a 13-4 deficit in points off of turnovers and a 14-3 edge in second chance points. Haverford's bench did outscore the Green Terror by a 14-6 margin thanks in large part to Lang's offensive output.

Men's basketball will host its home final this Wednesday with tipoff scheduled for 8 p.m. against the rival Garnet. The women's game against Swarthmore will get underway at 6 p.m. The 2016-17 season wraps up with a trip to Baltimore next Saturday against Johns Hopkins.
