Men's Basketball Celebrates Senior Day with 82-70 Win over Dickinson

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's basketball team celebrated its Senior Day in style, picking up an 82-70 victory against Dickinson. The win snapped the Fords' 12 game skid against Dickinson that dated back to the 2013 season against the perennially-strong Red Devils.

Seniors Kahlil Garnes and Joe Scibelli led the way with 25 and 20 points, respectively. The 25 point outing for Garnes was his second straight contest of 20-plus points and the 16th of his career. Garnes has now scored 25 or more points during six different games over his career. Scibelli added the 30th double-double of his career (12th this season) by pulling down an additional 10 rebounds in addition to his 20 points. Fellow senior Kyle Goldfarb added five points and two assists as all three seniors appeared in the starting five. Jesse Turkson also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Joe Wujciak made it four Fords in double figures as he finished with 11 points.

With all three seniors in the starting lineup, the Fords could not have asked for a better start as they led 14-0 just 3:20 into the first half. Scibelli scored the first two points of the game and Garnes ended up with 10 of the next 12 points in the early blitz. Goldfarb got into the act as his steal led to a fast break that Garnes turned into an old-fashioned three-point play. Even when the Red Devils scored their first two points of the game, Goldfarb followed that up with a jumper and three-pointer on successive possessions to break into the scoring column and give the Fords a 19-2 lead.

The Fords' lead reached as many as 18 point in the opening half as Scibelli knocked down a pair of free throws to set the score at 21-3 with nearly seven minutes gone by. Scibelli went on to hit each of his eight free throws on the afternoon, marking the seventh time in his career that he has been perfect from the free throw line with at least six attempts during a game.

Dickinson began to gain some traction late in the opening half and had the Haverford lead down to four points, 34-30, with just 2:09 remaining before halftime. Nevertheless, the Fords countered with the final six points of the half and carried a 40-30 lead into the locker room.

For much of the second half, Haverford's lead hovered right around double figures as the Fords continually denied any thoughts of a Dickinson rally. The Red Devils got the game to within a single possession just once during the second half. Leading 60-57 with 8:41 left in regulation following a brief 5-0 Dickinson spurt, Jonathan Lang grabbed on offensive board and went back up strong and eventually converted on the and-one attempt. Just two possessions later, Garnes was fouled in the act of shooting a three and calmly knocked down each attempt to make the score 66-58 with just over seven minutes to play. That eight-point difference was the closest Dickinson managed to come the rest of the way in Haverford's 82-70 win.

Haverford outshot the Red Devils from the floor, but also did a lot of its damage at the free throw line. The Fords made 26 trips to the charity stripe and knocked down 21 of those attempts, while Dickinson got to the line just 16 times in total. Haverford also owned a huge 47-34 advantage on the boards, turning that into a 23-9 edge in second chance points.

Men's basketball will head back out on the road for two games this coming week. Up next will be a 7 p.m. tip against Muhlenberg on Wednesday, February 6. Next Saturday, the Fords will head to McDaniel in search of their second straight season sweep of the Green Terror. The contest in Westminster is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.
