Men's fencing sweeps home meet

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's fencing team swept the field of visiting Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) opponents on Saturday in the Fords' initial home meet of the season. Haverford defeated Rutgers University, Cornell University, Drew University and Lafayette College.

In the first round against Rutgers, the foil squad pulled it together to win 5-4 after a shaky start. The sabre squad was also able to top the Scarlet Knights, 5-4, while the epees had an easier time, winning 6-3. In the next round it was the sabre squad who stood out with a 6-3 win over Cornell while epee and foil each registered narrow 5-4 wins. The foil squad then ramped it up to dominate Drew and Lafayette at 9-0 and 8-1, respectively.

Freshman epeeist Eric Gardner and junior co-captain foilist Max Findley led the team with identical 8-1 records on the day, and senior squad leader Darwin Keung went 6-5 to lead the sabers.

The Haverford men will return to competition on Saturday, Dec. 7, when it hosts Drexel University and rival Swarthmore College.
