Men's fencing shines at home

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's fencing team hosted local rivals Swarthmore College and Drexel University on Saturday in the Andy Kates Fencing Salle at the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center.

Several freshmen and walk-ons started against the club teams and the event proved to be an excellent measuring stick for the Fords' less experienced fencers. The young sabre squad had the closest matches of the day, including a tight 5-4 victory over a strong group from Swarthmore.

Foilists Baptiste Teyssier and Max Findley, both undefeated on the day, were each touched by an opponent just six times in the entire competition.

Freshman epeeist Jake Bassinder also had a standout day with a 5-1 mark while classmates Ching Li and Aldis Gamble went 4-1 and 4-2, at sabre and foil, respectively.

Saturday's meet was the Fords' final competition of 2013. Haverford returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 12 when it travels to Penn State University to compete against several Division I heavyweights including Duke University, University of North Carolina, University of Pennsylvania, Temple University and the host Nittany Lions.
