Men's fencing takes on top-ranked opponents at PSU Invitational

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Haverford College men's fencing team competed on Sunday at the Penn State Invitational.

Fencing against the University of North Carolina (UNC), Duke, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, and the host Nittany Lions, the Fords hoped to improve their seeding for the upcoming NCAA Regionals. Although Haverford did not pick up any match wins, the strong foil squad went 2-3 overall, and a young, but feisty, epee squad put a scare in several top teams.

Foilists Max Findley and Lawrence Wang both had winning records on the day, going 9-6 and 8-7, respectively. Findley and Wang joined squadmates Baptiste Teyssier and Aldis Gamble in taking down the foil squads from UNC and Penn.

The Fords also picked up important individual wins against Duke, Columbia and PSU; Findley and epee squad leader Warren Schwartz registered the only wins against host Penn State on a day that saw many 4-5 losses across all weapon squads.

Haverford's young sabre squad received a boost to the lineup during the last two rounds of the Invite as Dan Fries returned from a semester abroad. Fries' steady improvement, as well as a steep learning curve exhibited by freshmen Ben Cattau and Ching Li, bodes well for the future. Saturday's epee scoring was led by freshmen Reid Cohen and Jake Bassinder, with three apiece.

The Fords will host their alumni bouts and banquet next weekend before facing another array of Division I teams at the Philadelphia Invitational hosted by Penn on January 26.
