Fords place 3rd at MACFA championships, Gardner wins epee gold

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Haverford College men's fencing team placed third at the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) Championships hosted by Army on Sunday.

Led by the foil squad's second-place finish, the Fords placed ahead of 11 teams but fell to eventual champion Johns Hopkins University and runner-up Stevens Institute of Technology. Both the epee and sabre squads placed sixth out of the 14 teams participating.

Foilist and co-captain Max Findley led all scorers with a 10-3 record, and qualified to the individual round with the third seed. Also qualifying to the individual rounds were sabrist Joshua Nadel, who placed 12th, and foilists Baptiste Teyssier and Lawrence Wang, finishing sixth and 10th, respectively. Findley battled all the way to the gold medal bout, where he dropped a close decision to New Jersey Institute of Technology's David Kong and garnered the second MACFA silver medal of his career.

For the epeeists, only "A" slot fencer Eric Gardner (pictured) qualified to the individual round but the freshman made his presence known. Gardner registered several upsets and eventually defeated Stevens' Kirk Visser to win the gold medal and claim the MACFA individual epee championship.

The Fords will compete next Saturday in Easton, Pa., at the NCAA Regionals hosted by Lafayette College.
