Men's Fencing Goes 3-1 at MACFA Meet

BALTIMORE – On Super Bowl Sunday, the Haverford College men's fencing team traveled to Johns Hopkins for a MACFA meet. The Fords defeated conference rivals William and Mary, University of Maryland, and Navy, while suffering their only defeat of the afternoon against host Johns Hopkins.

Freshman sabrist David Parker led all fencers on the day. After dropping his first bout to open the match against Johns Hopkins, Parker never looked back and won his next eleven bouts. Fellow freshman Henry Li won five sabre bouts for his highest win tally of the year. Replacement sabrist, and usual epeeist,  Edward Ogborn won two bouts, both at the 5-4 margin.

In the epee, junior co-captain Eric Gardner was close behind Parker, finishing his day with a 10-2 record. Both of his losses came by narrow 5-4 margins. Fellow epeeists Jake Bassinder and co-captain Kailash Faris each won four bouts on the day.

For the first time this season, all foil fencers had a winning record. Ching Li and Ian Wheeler each won six bouts and dropped three, while Devin Louis and Matthew Soulanille were each 5-4. In the last round, the foil squad delivered its first blanking, taking down Navy 9-0.

The men's fencing team will next compete in another MACFA Tournament this coming Sunday, February 14 at Stevens Tech.
