Men's Fencing Dominates Competition at MACFA Tournament

MADISON, N.J. – This past Sunday, the Haverford College men's fencing team went undefeated in MACFA action. The Fords took down rivals Lafayette, The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), Marist, Rutgers, Cornell, and host Drew. Five members of the team were also undefeated on the day, including three freshmen.

Senior epeeist Jake Bassinder led all fencers on the day, with a perfect 17-0 record. Sophomore sabrist Gabriel Braun and freshman foilist Jack Leighninger each tallied 15 wins without taking a loss. Perfect 12-0 sets were posted by John Hare (sabre) and Yan Yan Xie (foil).

Haverford's bench had a successful day as well, as Henry Li posted a 10-5 record subbing in to the sabre. Ian Wheeler was 5-4 in epee, while Russell Rivera stood strong at 10-1 in the foil. Rivera showed his focus by winning all three of his five-touch bouts that went to four-all.

The foil and sabre squads each swept three of their opponents, tallying a 9-0 record in total bouts. Foil swept Lafayette, TCNJ, and Marist, while sabre dusted its broom with TCNJ, Marist, and Cornell.

Next week the Fords will continue in conference action with another MACFA meet hosted at NJIT in Newark, N.J. on Sunday.
